The floating giveaway

(Note: If you are reading this on goodreads, please do not enter here. Go here: http://laurendestefano.livejournal.com/

In case you missed it, a while back I announced that Simon & Schuster BFYR will be publishing a BRAND NEW SERIES that I wrote with my own two typing hands. You can read more about that here: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17339241-perfect-ruin

And even though it's just a tad early, I just love an opportunity to give away free stuff... The fact that ARCs aren't printed isn't going to stop me. Are you interested in winning something that hasn't been printed yet? OF COURSE YOU ARE, and you have come to the right place, my friend. So here's how it works: This giveaway will carry through from now until Sunday, March 31st at 12:01 AM. The giveaway will be INTERNATIONAL, and the winner will be drawn using a random number generator. Based on the number of entries, I'll throw in a few consolation prize packs that will include some signed copies of my Chemical Garden books and/or a mystery book that I think you'd also enjoy.

Still in? Here's what you have to do. Internment is about a city that floats 30,000 feet in the sky, with virtually no means of getting to the ground below. In 100 words or less, write a piece of flash fiction about a person who would live in such a city. Your flash fiction can be told in any tense, and any perspective. It can be serious or silly. It can even be a poem! The winner will NOT be determined by content; I just want to see you guys have some fun. Once you've written your flash fiction:

1.) Tweet/facebook/tumblr/blog/whatever the following: "Enter to win a floating ARC of @LaurenDeStefano's #InternmentChronicles! http://laurendestefano.livejournal.com/1590.html" Use this exact tweet. For your entry, don't RT or repost something else. :)

2.) Comment on this blog post with your flash fiction and a link to your tweet/facebook/tumblr/blog/whatever post IN THE SAME ENTRY. You may advertise about the giveaway in as many places as you like, but please no more than one entry per person.

3.) Be sure to check out the summary for #InternmentChronicles on goodreads! http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17339241-perfect-ruin

4.) Pet a cat, hug a baby farm animal, eat some grapes and check back on March 31st to see if you've won!

Winners will be announced here. I will not email the winners; it will be their responsibility to check back and see the instructions for reaching me! Please remember this step, as it would make me very sad if you missed out.

NOTE: ARCs for this book have NOT been printed yet. I don't know when they are coming, but whether it is one day or six months from now, I will be certain to send it to the winner right away. If, for some reason, ARCs are never printed, the winner will receive a finished hardback instead. Think of this as like a blind date.

All of these were so fun! Loved reading them. The randomly drawn winner is @KhunsaAmin!

I’ve always wondered what the edge of the world looks like. I’ve never dared crossing the fence separating us from the sky below, until now. One step forward would be nothing. I hear him call to me and I know I should turn back. I press my foot harder into the ground and take a step forward. He screams. I fall. The air is cold and I close my eyes against it. I’m finally free from this prison. Suddenly there is a net around me, keeping me from plummeting. I’m flown back up to the island. I will never escape.

“As I look out around me, all I see is light blue and white puffy clouds. That’s it. There’s no green grass, no dirt, nothing. Quite frankly, I’m sick of it and that’s exactly why I stole that gear from the Scientists. I built this device that I thought would help me get out of this confining, floating orb. It would’ve worked, you know. A week from now, I would’ve been sun bathing on a beach somewhere with no worries. Unfortunately, I got caught going too close to the Barrier and was thrown into the Exile. Hurry, please send help.”

The Floating Giveaway.
Hi Lauren, what a great give away, thank you.
I have tweeted, and you can see my tweet here: https://twitter.com/RochelleSharpe/status/305501712251248640

I've added the Internment Chronicles to my Goodreads, sounds amazing by the way.

And here's my flash fiction, hope you like it:

In my dreams I’m always standing on the edge, the world below blocked by a thick white mist. Something tugs at my heart and a chorus echoes in my ear, though the words are indistinguishable. Sometimes I have wings and I can go up, though never down. When I soar, the mist parts, but I’m too high to see anything below. Except the boy. His blue eyes piece mine, and they call to me. And I want to go to him, but I can’t.
I wake with a heavy heart, wondering if my dreams are merely dreams, or something more.

Have you ever wondered if the world you live in is real? That's me! Living in a place where everything is a dream and not knowing the reality that awaits you. My name is Nymeria, and I live in a world above reality. My dream is to explore the unknown and to escape my world. I always had a feeling that I was born to discover something beyond our cloud of hope. When I say cloud I literally mean it (well at least that's what I feel our world is... A cloud). Not joking! I wake up in my "normal world," go to school, meet my friends and sit at the edge of our "cloud" and wonder if there is something underneath us. Maybe it's something that is just waiting to be discovered or something that we are forbidden to learn about. I will discover the unknown even though it means loosing my life and disrupting our society.

Flash Fiction-
I look down at the clouds below my feet. I find it hard to believe there was a time where we lived on the ground. I've grown used to the gentle sways of the village from time to time; so much so that when there isn't any wind, I find myself missing it.. I've even grown used to the heights. I'm one of the lucky ones. Sometimes, when I'm awake late at night, I'll hear my roommate talk in her sleep. But she's not really talking. She's always screaming. Screaming about falling off the edge of the village.

I love this giveaway!!!

Flash fiction:

“But what’s on the ground?”

I roll my eyes as my sister asks this for the hundredth time. I supposed it’s natural for kids to be curious, but the constant questions about the ground grate on my nerves.

Our city was built 30,000 feet above the ground for a reason. Whatever’s on the ground must be dangerous, or we wouldn’t be up here. Hopefully when she’s older, she’ll stop questioning things that no longer matter, things she’ll never find an answer for.

And maybe then I'll stop questioning things too.

Floating giveaway - Entry
I have always wanted to see the rain. This is one sacrifice we pay for living above the clouds. I watch them toil and darken beneath our city, and hear rumbling thunder from their depths, and wonder what it must be like to dwell beneath such power. Do those Below fear what I crave? Do they rejoice? Or is it simply for them a factor in their day, whilst I watch from Above, wishing for the same so fervently? How is it fair that they only need to walk to catch droplets in their eyelashes to hang like glistening stars?

The floating giveaway
1) I tweeted: https://twitter.com/BookCrazy1/status/305601593204682752

2) Here is my flash fiction :)

Imagine living in a city 30,000 feet in the air. Imagine living in an enclosed bubble with no means of escape. Imagine having a ruthless government rule the city and banish people to “the ground.” My name is Grace and this is my city. The bubble I live in is a relatively new development but I have been living in it my entire life. I have always wondered what fresh air is like. The feel of real grass and the songs of the birds are constant wishes of mine but they will never be granted unless I am banished to “the ground.”

3) I checked out the synopsis on Goodreads and added it to my TBR list!

4) I have actually held a chicken and fed a deer. I probably shouldn't admit that lol!

Thank you for the giveaway :)

A surprising but pleasant giveaway. Huh. This officially makes you the best author ever!
Here's my flash fiction. It's from a point of view of a teenager living at the Internment.

The sky is beautiful today. It makes me want to go jump over the edge of this floating city and lie on the clouds. But I know that I wouldn't risk it because that would make me a jumper just like Morgan Stockhour's brother, Lex. It would make me lose my sanity and thinking about it makes me want to throw up. I know that what's on the ground is never meant for us. I have all that I need here in the Internment; A safe and secure life.

But is it all that I want?

Here's my Tweet:

Hope I win because I really want to read this book of yours like, right now! I'm so obsessed with it that I checked the book's page on Goodreads twice a day! No kidding!

Feb. 24th, 2013 02:07 pm (UTC)
I lay on the ground and watch the clouds float around me. Grandma used to tell me stories of the old days, when people still lived on the ground. Children would spend hours staring at the clouds, trying to find shapes in them. I sit up and sigh. Grandma is dead, and I'm not on the ground.

On a clear day you can almost see the ruins. They say that it used to be a great civilization, but then the wars started. They weren't like the so-called "World Wars" of the 20th century. Every single country was fighting against each other. No one trusted anyone, and no one could agree on anything. To escape, many people fled to the sky cities, and that is where we are today.

No one lives on the ground anymore. They say it's a barren wasteland, ripe with bandits and very little food. I always believed it, until the day that I stood near the edge and looked down. And it was beautiful. The colours were unlike anything I had ever seen before; the green grass and the blue ocean, and they way the sun sparkled on the water. There was only one problem.

We're aren't allowed to look down.

So excited for this book! It's such an interesting and unique concept and I can't wait to read it!

Living on Internment
This is a wonderful opportunity, Lauren!! A million times thank you for you generosity!
"We will destroy this world of violence and build a new, stronger world. Our world." That's what they told us. Earth would be no more, and we would live in the sky. I still don't know how they managed to raise an entire city into the sky. The young ones learn about it in school, but I had just turned twenty when I moved to Internment.
Sometimes I regret coming. I wish that I had kept my head out of the clouds. After all, she decided to stay grounded. I'll never see her again.
They destroyed her with the Earth.

And here is my little flash fiction:

I stop a couple of feet before the edge.
Tears are rolling down my cheeks and kiss the ground as they fall down.
Just like he decided that he would fall, no jump down towards the ground.
A shiver runs up my back and I feel the wind tucking at my hair.
I don´t dare to come any closer to the edge.
Yet, knowing that this was the last place where he stood, gives me strength.
I walk closer, carefully as if I´m a tightrope dancer.
Would I dare to come any closer?
Would I dare to look down?

"I wake up gasping for breath, cold sweat covering every inch of my body. I try to take deep breaths, but the thin air makes this extremely difficult. Now calm, I step out on to the chilly balcony and gaze longingly down at The Below, past the edge of this retched city. I've had the dream again. The dream where, at the end, I kill myself. I guess it's no surprise. Being trapped here is driving me insane. I need to find a way to The Below before I do something I will truly regret."

Hi, awesome giveaway.

Twitter: https://twitter.com/EpsilonCygni/status/305737492202659840

Just sitting here with Amy, my betrothed feels so relaxing. I look at her and I can’t believe my luck.
The grass is stroking her pale long legs, wind is playing with her long dark hair and her eyes are closed as she smells the small white flowers that are growing all over the field.
‘’This must be true happiness’’ is what I say and Amy looks up.
It is a perfect moment filled with peace and quiet which is suddenly disrupted as I see people running around with scared faces.
I look at Amy and we get up, worried.

Sunlight dances through the glass, illuminating the minute particles of dust in the air. They twirl and tumble in and out of sight, going nowhere. They remind me of myself, a bit. In Internment, I have no idea what I want to do with my life. None of the work regions, Nutrition, Gravity Control, and Security, interests me at all. I live to look at the stars. For now, I work in the retail sector selling rare artifacts from the ground. My cheerful nametag reads, “Hello, my name is Adero. Ask me about artifacts!” There are rumors of jumpers who sneak artifacts back into Internment, but I’m sure it’s just myth.
